Is your Therapist registered?

REGISTRATION WITH THE Health Professions Council

Protection of Title

From 9 th July 2005 it is against the law for practitioners who are not registered with the Health Professions Council to use the title "Physiotherapist" or "Physical Therapist" (This also applies to the titles "Chiropodist", "Podiatrist" etc).

In the UK it is mandatory for health professionals to be registered with the Health Professions Council (previously Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine - CPSM) in order for them to work for the NHS or be recognised by health insurance companies.

For more information go to:
www.hpc-uk.org

To check whether your therapist is registered select the title from the drop down menu (e.g. Physiotherapist), select to "see the online register", then enter the surname of the person you are searching about (e.g. Watson). This will give you a list of all practitioners with that surname and the area in which they work.

If you discover that your therapist is not registered you should inform the HPC because it may be a breach of the law. This can be an anonymous tip off, or a formal letter of complaint, but the HPC do need evidence that the person is using a protected title without being registered - e.g. a brochure or advertisement.

Any information and evidence should be sent by letter or e-mail to the "Director of Fitness to Practice" at:
